Stefan Wewerka — Old and New Works
Cabinet Exhibition Room 10

The fourth exhibition in Room 10 is dedicated to sculptor Stefan Wewerka, a former teacher at the Kölner Werkschule (Cologne Crafts School) who celebrated his 80th birthday last year. Departing from architecture his will to creation extends to all the artistic genres. No matter if a chair becomes a sculpture through the intervention of his exacting hands or a sculpture he designs becomes a chair because it is usable as such. What matters to the artist is the plastic result. By taking known objects out of their everyday contexts, and, as a designer, providing them at the same time with a practical purpose, his works emphasize the insoluble relationship between art and life. The exhibition shows a selection of his works, among other things a chair sculpture designed especially for Kolumba and a “cape” that is worn by the security personnel. “I can disassemble any building, as banal as it may be, into its individual parts, and using precisely this material, create a wonderful, new architecture.” (Wewerka, 1968)
