Birgit Antoni: Cinema

Birgit Antoni is well known as a painter. Her works display complex ornamental structures that result from overlaying several picture elements. Due to such layering, a spatial effect comes about, which optically energizes the surfaces. Considering her paintings, it is not surprising that the artist dealt intensively with film animation in the 1980s. Her movies, recorded on Super 8 and 16-mm film, enjoyed great success at festivals in Europe, Asia, and the USA and were published in the magazine for video art INFERMENTAL, an international platform dedicated to promoting "innovative, audio-visual cinematographic ideas". After that time, her films sank into oblivion, not lastly due to the poor condition of the material.
After having shown two cabinet exhibitions of Birgit Antoni's paintings, we are now able to present her early films to the public for the first time in a restored state.
