Peter Tollens – Studies, paintings, books
Stars for Kolumba – Part I

Kolumba is the name of the Cologne Diocese Museum’s new building, which has been planned by the architect Peter Zumthor and is currently being built on the unique ruins of the former parish church St. Kolumba in the city centre of Cologne. Following a long preparation period, construction works have finally begun and will be completed by 2005. Bearing the title of “Stars for Kolumba” we are launching a series of exhibitions to keep us occupied and give us the chance to prepare the collection for the planned move. In this series we represent the various areas of the museum with selected major works of art extending from early Christianity to the present, from antique spoils to functional vessels. The search for general order, for measure, proportion and beauty, as a connecting element of all artistic creation, is a main theme of our museum. Continuity is essential for such an understanding of the museum.
In years past, we have been able to realise major focal points of emphasis – mainly in connection with donations. It is these highlights in our collection which we would like to show in loose order until the new building is ready.
We are beginning with works of Cologne painter, Peter Tollens, whose pieces we have displayed individually at various times. We now present his oeuvre in a survey spanning twenty years containing studies, paintings and books. Our publication extends beyond the exhibition in the form of a visual chronology as a workbook in our series.
