Johann Anton Friedrich Baudri (1804 – 1893)
President of the Society for Christian Art Museum director 1855 – 1891 Johann Baudri was born in Elberfeld on 20 February 1804. He was ordained as priest on 26 April 1827, and made canon of Cologne Cathedral on 1 August 1843. On 1 September 1846 he was named vicar general of the Archbishopric of Cologne, where he was then made Suffragan bishop in 1850. In 1853 Baudri became president of the “Christian Society for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in the Archbishopric of Cologne”. From 1864 to 1866, following the death of Cardinal von Geissel, acting in his position as canon vicar, he carried out the administration of the Archbishopric until Cardinal Melchers took office. Calls to become bishop in Paderbon, Trier, Cologne and Freiburg all failed due to the state’s resistance to his ultra-montanistic views. In 1889 he handed over his duties to Suffragan Bishop Fischer because of his advancing age. Johann Baudri died in Cologne on 29 June 1893. | Art museum of the
