Chris Newman, “Circumstance”
(kolumba series # 1: “For All Souls”)

“For All Souls” (kolumba series # 1) is a neighborhood project: Kolumba, Art Museum of the Cologne Archdiocese, and the Community of Fransciscan Minorites at St. Kolumba invite you on the Day of the Christian commemoration of the dead to the Cologne premiere of “Circumstance”, a composition written in 2016 by Chris Newman, after texts by the American poet Anne Sexton. The music, location and time all come together in an ideal way for this concert: This work was commissioned in memory of a deceased person and will now be performed in the Chapel of the Madonna in the Ruins, which – like the KOLUMBA Museum – stands above the tombs of a Late Gothic Church. The ancient, though still relevant, tradition of commemoration constitutes the occasion for this concert. However, at the same time, this composition supplements the title of this year’s exhibition at Kolumba, Pas de deux , with a musical commentary, since the four songs that make up Circumstance each consist of a canon for two singers and two stringed instruments, i.e., they form a musical dance of two couples. The composition lasts 30 minutes. Following an intermission, the Minorite Vespers service will take place in the Chapel.

As the subtitle tells us, this concert marks the beginning of a series. Each year on
November 1st a commissioned composition is to be performed here, taking up and carrying on the tradition of the commemoration of the dead – with the means of music.
