KlangWerk (Soundscape)
The museum as a sound-workshop
A growing archive

You have entered the museum. Where am I? What can I see? Look carefully. Take your time. What is my location? There is the art and here am I. And what is in between? What catches my eye? What gets me going? What does the room sound like? How cold is the door? And what is hidden behind it? Testing spaces with all your senses. The museum as a physical entity. There are stories unfolding within. Questions pop up. I don’t understand! Can you make this out? Can I trust my own judgement? Close your eyes if you like. There’s a thought! I’ll go for it. Something new is happening, something unprecedented. Eyes light up.
Dialogue is the basis of the KlangWerk project. The activities are shaped by the interests, queries, topics and priorities that arise. Art as an open space, in which there is enough room to accommodate anything and everything. The museum interior becomes a workshop and the recording device a research tool. The material for the soundscape montages consists of the participants’ statements about the works and the space, feedback from testing out the art and the architecture and improvisation with objects and instruments. The recordings are downloaded to the computer and technical skills acquired for sound editing. Finally the material is shaped into a whole. What speaks for itself, where do I have to make adjustments? Take a step back, then go back to the material. Listen to it again. Let it sink in. Get close. Audio collages come into being, short experimental tracks – each a soundscape in its own right. Every person is an artist. Hear this for yourself!
KlangWerk is based on an idea proposed by Annette Ziegert and first took form in 2013–2016 in collaboration with Susanne Heincke along with numerous young people. Since 2016 Susanne Heincke has shaped the project with the help of Suzanne Josek and is constantly developing it further. We extend our thanks to Ulrike Nießen and to the Kath. Bildungswerk (Catholic Education Service) in the Rhine-Erft district for continuing to support the project conceptually and financially. We are very grateful to all the pupils and teachers who have taken part!
