Martin Frommelt »Apocalypse Vähtreb Creation«
Stars for Kolumba – Part 5
The series “Stars for Kolumba” continues with three brilliant graphic cycles. »Apocalypse« (1962-1972), »Vähtreb« (1975-1986) and «Creation« (1989-1999) are the titles of Liechtenstein artist Martin Frommelt’s main works. In these works he propagates an equivalent of creation with a wealth of forms and at the same time demands the increasing knowledge of art by means of the hidden connections of life and myth. Already the sequence »Vähtreb« (Cattle Drive) reveals Frommelt’s sensitivity and sure hand with these structures assumed to be taken over from ancient tradition. In the monumental »Creation«, circles and squares are faced with nets and latticework, cell structures and crystalline polygons extending the spectrum. 214 etchings, each consisting of several plates, have been united in »Five Constellations« on large-format double sheets. Their abundance prevents an overall view and demands with every turn of the page a new confrontation and a new search for parameters of a possible order. The unique “performance” of the five constellations on the main stage of the Cologne Theatre tries to capture the work’s spatial universality. The exhibition is supplemented with expressionist art by Georg Baumgarten, Heinrich Campendonk, Gerhard Marcks and Walter Ophey as well as contemporary works by Heiner Binding, Leiko Ikemura and Bärbel Messmann.
